General Crook's Headquarters at Fort Omaha Historical Marker

    Feb 17, 2012 · This large building was constructed in 1879 as General Crook’s headquarters. In 1881 General Crook moved his headquarters downtown to be near the Union Pacific terminal and warehouses. The building then served as a hospital until the post was abandoned in 1896.

    The 35-year-old Crook reported to army headquarters at City Point, Virginia, where the commanding general explained the mission in person. Grant instructed Crook to march his force, the Kanawha Division, against the railroad at Dublin, Virginia, 140 miles (230 km) south of Charleston.

    General Crook established his headquarters at Fort Omaha in 1879. His headquarters were later moved to a location in downtown Omaha in order to be closer to the Union Pacific terminal and warehouses. In April 1909, Fort Omaha began its role as a training and testing centerfor the military use of hot air balloons for reconnaissance missions.
